Instagram Character Counter
Type or paste text and watch the length against the ceiling for the field you are filling in. The counter tracks captions, profile text, display names and hashtag strings separately, and also reports word, hashtag, mention and emoji totals as you go.
Four Ceilings and Four Live Tallies
The page pairs one editable box with a dropdown that selects which ceiling applies. Every keystroke re-runs the measurement, so the number and the coloured bar update without a button press. Alongside the length it counts four other things about the same string.
- Captions are measured against 2,200 units, profile text against 150, display names against 64 and a hashtag string against 30. These are four separate allowances, not one shared limit.
- The remaining figure counts down and then flips to an over-by number once the text passes the ceiling.
- A progress bar fills from left to right. It stops at full width once the text is at or beyond the limit rather than overflowing the track.
- The colour is green while there is comfortable room, amber when fewer than ten percent of the allowance remains, and red once the text is over. The amber band uses a strict comparison, so exactly ten percent left still reads green.
- Below the bar sit four tiles: word count, hashtag count, mention count and emoji count, all computed from the same text without any further input.
- Because the ceiling changes with the dropdown, the same sentence can be comfortable as a caption and far over the line as a hashtag string.
Checking a Piece of Text
- Choose the field you are writing for in the dropdown: caption, bio, name or hashtags.
- Type or paste the text into the box. There is no submit step; the numbers move as you type.
- Watch the large ratio reading first, since it shows the used count over the ceiling for the selected field.
- Glance at the remaining figure. A positive number is the room you still have; a negative one is how far past the ceiling you have gone.
- Treat the colour as a rough signal only, and check the exact number before you commit, because the amber warning appears a little before the ceiling, not at it.
- Use the word, hashtag, mention and emoji tiles to confirm that a paste carried the items you expected across.
- Copy the text out with the copy button, or clear the box to start again; neither action changes anything stored on the device.
What the Tiles Report for Two Short Strings
Length is counted by JavaScript string units rather than by visible glyphs, which matters the moment an emoji is involved. These two examples show where the number and the eye disagree.
- "Hello" followed by a single waving-hand emoji reports 8 units even though there are only seven glyphs on screen, because that emoji is stored as a surrogate pair and occupies two units. The word tile reads 2 and the emoji tile reads 1.
- "Café" with a coffee cup, the tag #travel and the mention @jane reports 20 units, 4 words, 1 hashtag, 1 mention and 1 emoji.
- The accented letter in Café adds one unit, not two; only characters outside the basic plane, such as emoji, cost two units each.
- The same 20-unit string leaves 2,180 as a caption, 130 as a bio, 44 as a name and 10 as a hashtag string.
- The hashtag case is the tightest of the four: with a ceiling of 30 there is not much room left after one tag and one mention, even though the same words are unremarkable in a caption.
- The amber band begins earlier on smaller ceilings. For a bio it appears at 14 remaining units or fewer, while for a caption it does not appear until 219 units or fewer are left.
Ways to Fit a Message Into a Fixed Allowance
| Alternative | Notes |
| Compress the opening | Keep the first line short and put the detail later. The opening is what most readers see before any truncation, so the length is best spent there rather than distributed evenly. |
| Move extras to the first comment | Long hashtag strings and secondary links can sit in a comment under the post. The caption stays lean and the additional terms still travel with the thread. |
| Split into a carousel | If the thought genuinely needs the space, spread it across several frames instead of forcing it into one caption. Each slide can be short, and the caption becomes a caption again. |
| Send readers to the profile | When the message has a destination, trim the caption to a hook and keep the full explanation behind the link in the profile rather than in the field itself. |
Where the Counting Happens
The tally is plain arithmetic on a string held in the page. Nothing is measured on a server, and the text never leaves the browser while you type.
- No account, sign-in or upload is involved; the box simply drives a function that re-measures the current value.
- Copy places the text on the system clipboard through the browser's clipboard interface; clearing empties the box and re-runs the measurement.
- The counters describe what the browser holds, not what any platform will accept after it applies its own processing.
- CJK text is counted one unit per character, because the length is taken from the string's own unit count rather than a display-width rule.
- Emoji sequences that combine several code points are counted by units, so a single visible pictogram can consume more than one unit.
- Reloading the page returns the box to empty; nothing is written to storage between visits.
Counting Questions
Why does one emoji add two to the count?
Because the length is measured in the string units the browser uses, and an emoji outside the basic range is stored as a surrogate pair of two units. The emoji tile still reports it as a single emoji, so the length and the emoji count can disagree about the same character.
What exactly counts as a hashtag or a mention?
A hashtag is a hash followed by one or more word characters, and a mention is an at sign followed by the same. Only the tagged token is matched, so surrounding punctuation does not join the tag. A hash followed by a space or a symbol is not counted.
When does the counter turn amber?
When fewer than a tenth of the allowance remains, using a strict comparison. On the 150 ceiling that means 14 remaining or fewer; on the 2,200 ceiling it means 219 or fewer. Exactly one tenth left is still green, and a negative remaining figure turns the reading red.
Is the hashtag allowance a number of tags or a number of characters?
It is a character allowance for the hashtag string you paste in, set at 30 units. It is not a cap on how many tags you may use; it measures the length of the text in the box when hashtags are the selected field.
Does the page store or send what I type?
No. The measurement is done in the page and the text stays in the browser. There is no upload and no saved copy, so anything you have not copied out is gone once the tab is closed.
