Passport Fees Calculator

Total up what a US passport application is likely to cost, separating the fee that goes to the State Department from the fee you hand to the acceptance facility. Choose the applicant, the application type, the document and any extras, and the page returns an itemised breakdown with the total.

Important: Not Legal Advice

This page looks up published fee schedules and performs arithmetic on them. It is not legal advice, and using it does not create a solicitor–client relationship. Fees, exemptions and procedural rules vary by court, case type and jurisdiction, and are revised periodically. Always confirm the current figures with the relevant court, government office or a qualified legal professional.

Application Fee Plus Where It Is Paid

A passport bill is really two bills. One is the application fee that goes to the State Department; the other is an execution or acceptance fee paid to the facility that witnesses the application in person. The page keeps these apart, then adds any optional extras you select, so you can see which portion is which before you turn up at a post office or agency.

Building a Passport Quote

  1. Set Applicant age to Adult (16+) or Child (under 16). Child passports cost less to apply for but always require the in-person route and carry the execution fee.
  2. Set Application type: new passport, renewal by mail, or lost/stolen replacement. This is the field that decides whether the execution fee applies.
  3. Choose the Document type — book, card only, or book plus card. The card is only valid for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean, not for international air travel.
  4. Choose the Processing speed. Routine is listed at six to eight weeks; the expedited, urgent and emergency options each add the same sixty-dollar fee.
  5. Say whether you need photos and whether you need fast delivery, then read the breakdown. Any relevant notes appear underneath as yellow panels.
  6. Expand the official fee schedule to check the base fees for the other applicant and document combinations before you decide.

The Default Case and Two Variations

The page opens on an adult, a new application, a standard book and routine processing, with no photos and standard mail. Working through that and then two changes shows how the lines move.

Getting the Application Filed

AlternativeNotes
Acceptance facility, in personA post office, library or clerk's office that witnesses the application and forwards it. This is where the execution fee is paid and it is the standard route for first-time applications and all child applications. Expect two separate payments to two different recipients.
Renewal by mailEligible adults can renew a ten-year book without an appointment and without the execution fee, mailing the form and payment directly. It is the cheapest and least fiddly route, but only some applicants qualify, and the page models it exactly by dropping the execution line.
Passport agency appointmentFor travel inside the expedited window, an in-person agency appointment can be faster than mail. It still carries the same sixty-dollar expedite charge and the same application fee, so the fee total is unchanged; what you gain is speed, not a discount.
Third-party courier or expediting servicePrivate services handle paperwork and hand-carry requests for a service charge on top of the government fees. The government portion matches what this page computes; the courier's own fee is additional and outside the tool.

The Caveats Behind the Total

The arithmetic is exact, but the world around it moves. A few practical points matter more than another decimal place on the total.

Passport Fee Questions

When exactly is the thirty-five dollar execution fee charged?

Whenever the application must be made in person. That covers all first-time applications, all lost or stolen replacements and every child application, since children always apply in person. An adult renewal by mail does not pay it. The tool applies the rule as: if the type is not renewal, or the applicant is a child, add thirty-five dollars.

Why does expedited, urgent and emergency cost the same?

Because the page models them as a single sixty-dollar expedite charge rather than three separate prices. Choosing Urgent or Emergency adds the same sixty dollars as Expedited. The difference between them is the service route — an agency appointment rather than routine processing — not the amount, and the page adds a note explaining that urgent and emergency service needs an in-person appointment.

What does a card-only application change?

It lowers the application fee — thirty dollars for an adult card against one hundred and thirty for an adult book — and it makes fast delivery unavailable, because a passport card is sent by first-class mail. If you ask for fast delivery with a card-only document, the page still adds the delivery line but flags the conflict in a note. A card is also not valid for international air travel.

Is any of my input stored or sent anywhere?

No. The breakdown is calculated in the page from the options you select, and nothing is uploaded or saved. Switching away resets the form to its default adult, new, book, routine state, so make a note of the total if you want to keep it.
